IZBA LAB accentuates the power of craft as universal language that transcends borders, connects people from diverse cultures and backgrounds through shared passion and respect for their ancestral crafts heritage.
"Izba" an archaic term present in many slavic languages, refers to a traditional rural cottage house. Traditionally it contained locally crafted furnishings, textiles, and decor that showcased the community's heritage and culture. Locally sourced, durable construction made such Izba a form harmonious with its surroundings and naturally sustainable. Its interiors blended practicality and aesthetics, reflecting the community's distinct cultural identity.
Today in Poland, "izbas” are often found in village centres, where people gather for workshops and events preserving heritage techniques through knowledge exchange across generations.
The "Laboratory" aspect of the project's name relates to experimentation where journey towards the ultimate goal cannot bypass the often time consuming process. To reach the desired outcome, one must embrace the process. Time, patience, attention, and knowledge are essential —much like in craftsmanship.
Moreover, essential element of both Izba and Lab is collaboration.
